Burbage Brook flows through densely wooded Padley Gorge on the National Trust's Longshaw Estate. Yarncliffe Wood is a remnant of the mixture of Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) and birch woodland that once covered all the valley slopes and edges of the Dark Peak. Alder (Alnus glutinosa), a relative of birch, grows in the wet margins around the stream. There is a large percentage of oak growing here because it was deliberately planted to supply timber for the charcoal powered Sheffield iron industry.
